Understanding the Impact of Flirting
Flirting encompasses romantic or playful behaviour directed toward someone to whom one is sexually attracted, ranging from light-hearted interaction to serious romantic pursuit.
The Nature of Flirting
Flirting can be described as behaving romantically with someone you are sexually attracted to, either playfully or with serious intentions. While experiencing attraction to those of the opposite gender is not inherently sinful, how we respond to those attractions may lead us into sin. What is often dismissed as 'harmless' flirting rarely, if ever, actually remains harmless. The sin of lustful thoughts should be absolutely avoided (Prov 4:23, 6:25; Mt 5:28, 12:35).
Biblical Boundaries
While we are naturally attracted to those of the opposite sex, all interaction must be wholesome and above reproach, treating them as
your father, mother, brother or sister with absolute purity and integrity (1 Tim 5:1-2). We should act in a way worthy of the Lord,
being a good representative of His, displaying God-honouring qualities such as godliness, kindness and respect, not with inappropriate
behaviour (Gal 5:22-23). Whatever we do should be for the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31).
Is my conduct always honourable?
Scripture provides clear guidance on maintaining purity in our relationships and interactions. The heart must be guarded diligently, for from it flow the springs of life (Prov 4:23). Jesus Himself taught that looking at someone with lustful intent is equivalent to committing adultery in the heart (Mt 5:28). These principles call believers to exercise self-control and to pursue relationships that honour God and respect others, avoiding any behaviour that could compromise purity or lead others into temptation (2 Tim 2:22).
Reflection and Application:
- Examine your motives when interacting with those you find attractive.
- Consider whether your behaviour reflects purity and integrity.
- Pray for God's strength to guard your heart and mind.
- Seek accountability in maintaining appropriate boundaries.
