The Value and Purpose of Hobbies in Christian Living

Stewardship of Time and Talents

In your spare time, rather than aimless talk or excessive TV watching, develop skills, explore your interests and abilities through wholesome hobbies that keep your mind active, provide an outlet for creativity, increase personal self-esteem, and bring lasting pleasure.

We are stewards of the time and talents entrusted to us, and we will be held accountable for how we use them (Rom 14:12). Every activity we engage in should glorify God and not draw us away

What are my leisure activities?

from Him (1 Cor 10:31; Col 3:17). Provided our participation in a sport or hobby does not hinder our relationship with God, such activities can have a positive influence in our lives. A helpful test to determine if a hobby has become an idol is to ask: If it were taken away, would I still be content in Christ? Paul reminds us, "Everything is permissible for me — but I will not be mastered by anything" (1 Cor 6:12). Therefore, all pursuits — except loving God — must be practiced in moderation, so they do not become unbalanced or take precedence over our devotion to Him (Ex 20:3).

Hobbies as Tools for Growth and Service

While minding the sheep, David had many hours alone; he did not waste this time but used it to meditate on God’s Word and to practice practical skills such as playing the harp and using his slingshot. His meditation on God’s truth was foundational to his unwavering faith, while his other pursuits equipped him to serve others and advance in his divine calling (1 Sam 16:17,18, 23, 17:48–50).

This example illustrates how hobbies, when aligned with godly priorities, can foster spiritual growth, develop character, and prepare us for service. Creative expression, physical activity, and skill-building are not distractions when pursued with purpose and gratitude.
