The Existence of God: Evidence and Implications for Faith
The question of God's existence has been pondered throughout human history. While we cannot physically see God, numerous evidences point to a divine Creator. Understanding these truths transforms our worldview and relationship with the One who made us.
The Biblical Foundation
The Bible consistently assumes and affirms the existence of God. It matter-of-factly declares, "In the beginning God..." (Gen 1:1; Jn 1:1), presenting divine creation as the starting point of all reality. Scripture identifies those who deny God's existence as fools (Ps 14:1), not due to intellectual deficiency but because of willful suppression of truth. The biblical writers present God's existence as self-evident through creation, conscience, and revelation. We cannot fully comprehend or contain the infinite God, yet evidence overwhelmingly points to a master-mind behind the universe—a Being to whom we are accountable (Rom 14:12; Heb 4:13).
Evidence in Creation and Conscience
Unbelievers have suppressed the truth about God. Romans 1:18-20 explains that people know God's righteous orders through their conscience, yet they deliberately ignore them. God's invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—are clearly seen in what has been made, typified by whatever is good and beneficial in creation. By acknowledging there is a God, we accept our obligation to relate to Him and obey His directives. By denying God's existence, unbelievers effectively create their own gods, hoping there is no supreme authority, no accountability, and therefore no judgment.
We cannot physically see love, yet we know it exists through its effects and results. Similarly, God is Spirit—invisible to our physical
eyes—yet He operates in a realm more real than our limited understanding of the world (Jn 4:24). Evolutionists often dismiss the possibility
of any higher power than humanity, convinced that this complex universe emerged through random processes alone. They ignore even the
evidence of God's handiwork displayed in the heavens, let alone in humans—the pinnacle of creation who are made in the image of God (Gen
1:26-27; Ps 19:1-6, 139:14).
Although we can't physically prove God exists, the evidence confirms He does
Christians believe in the Creator who purposefully and deliberately created everything, establishing this amazingly intricate universe. Even though God is infinitely powerful, He desires an intimate relationship with humanity. He puts His Spirit within each person who acknowledges they are a sinner and turns to Him as Saviour (2 Cor 1:22). This reality is proved genuine as "The Spirit witnesses with our spirit that we are God's children" (Rom 8:16). "Without faith it is impossible to please God...we must believe He exists and rewards those who seek Him" (Jn 20:29; Heb 11:6).
Apologetics and Faith
Apologetics employs rational arguments to demonstrate God's existence. A classic example is the cosmological argument: if a house
has a builder, then creation must have a Creator. However, believing in God's existence does not result in salvation. Even the demons
believe God is real—and shudder (Jas 2:19). True salvation involves acknowledging personal sin, turning from it, and receiving through faith
Christ's forgiveness, resulting in a transformed lifestyle (Rom 8:13). Intellectual assent to God's existence is insufficient; what matters
is trusting Christ as Lord and Saviour.

Faith and Divine Revelation
Christianity fundamentally involves faith—a belief that what God has revealed is true. This faith is not blind credulity, but a reasoned trust in the God who has proven Himself faithful. The author of Hebrews defines faith as "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Heb 11:1). Biblical faith rests upon the foundation of God's character and His revealed truth in Scripture. When God speaks, faith responds with confidence that His Word is trustworthy and His promises are certain.
God has revealed Himself through multiple channels: the natural world declares His glory (Ps 19:1), the human conscience testifies to His moral law (Rom 2:14-15), and ultimately He revealed Himself fully in Jesus Christ (Heb 1:1-3). The Bible stands as His written revelation, inspired by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness (2 Tim 3:16-17). Faith embraces this revelation, acknowledging that God's Word is truth (Jn 17:17). This faith transforms our perspective, enabling us to "walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7) as we live according to God's promises rather than merely our circumstances.
Faith is also relational—it involves entrusting ourselves to the God who loves us. Jesus said, "This is eternal life, that they know
You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent" (Jn 17:3). Knowing God is not merely intellectual awareness, but a deep,
personal relationship that grows through faith. As we trust God's character and believe His promises, we experience His presence and
power in our lives. This living faith produces obedience, hope, and love—evidence that what God has revealed is indeed true and
transformative.
Faith is trusting that God's revelation is true and His promises are certain
Agnostics remain uncertain whether God exists, while atheists strongly deny He does. Both positions represent responses to the same evidence. The agnostic claims insufficient information, while the atheist interprets the evidence to exclude divine possibility. Neither position aligns with the biblical testimony that God has made Himself known through creation, conscience, and Christ.
Reflection and Application:
- Consider how the evidence of creation points to an Intelligent Designer.
- Reflect on how your conscience reveals God's moral law written on your heart.
- Examine whether you have suppressed truth about God or embraced it.
- Thank God that He desires relationship with you and has provided salvation through Christ.
