Tomorrow: Living Today in Light of God’s Providence

Tomorrow — a day that, in theory, never actually arrives, because once it dawns it has already become today. Scripture teaches us to plan for the future with humility, to trust God’s providence over all we cannot control, and to make the most of the present He has blessed us with.

God Holds Tomorrow in His Hands

It is wise to prepare and make plans while seeking guidance from God, but the outcomes are subject to His providence and over-ruling; “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that” (Jas 4:13-15). Hence the Bible’s advice, “Don’t boast about tomorrow, for you don’t know what it holds” (Prov 27:1).

We plan for the future while trusting God with the present

This is not fatalism but faith: we work, plan and prepare, yet we hold our plans loosely, trusting the One who rules over time itself and whose purposes stand firm even when ours change.

Do Not Worry About Tomorrow

Neither are we to worry about tomorrow, for each day has enough trouble of its own; our Father promises to care for us (Mt 6:34; 1 Pet 5:7). Worrying about tomorrow is a failure to trust in God and His ability to take care of us, and it accomplishes nothing (Mt 6:27-29).

The Bible’s positive advice to us is, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God" (Phil 4:6).

Make the Most of Today

As we do not know what tomorrow will bring forth, make the most of each day – the present with which He has blessed us. Do not delay by procrastinating, for time is the undoing of all good intentions. Tomorrow is Satan’s favourite day: he wants people to put off accepting Christ today or living for Jesus now. The best preparation for tomorrow, then, is faithfulness today.

What we experience tomorrow is largely determined by what we sow today, as the principle of sowing and reaping shows: “Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life” (Gal 6:7-8). Every thought, word and deed today is a seed that bears fruit in the days ahead – so sow faithfulness, kindness and obedience now, and trust God for a harvest in His timing.

The future begins with the actions we take today

Reflection and Application

Plan humbly — hold your plans loosely and say, “If the Lord wills”.
Refuse worry — hand each day’s troubles to the Father who cares for you.
Act today — don’t postpone obedience, reconciliation or sharing the gospel.
Live expectantly — use today’s opportunities for Christ, for tomorrow is not guaranteed.
