Television
<<visual medium of communication>>
This provides a means of keeping up with world affairs (which we as Christians should do) as well as being of educational value through documentaries stimulating the viewer’s mind. It may also provide entertainment, in a relaxed home setting. However, it can have a destructive influence on family life hindering meaningful communication, especially if meals are eaten while it is being watched. Some people also use it as an escape from reality and facing what needs to be done – an excuse to not be involved with others. Many programmes are morally degrading, and the worldly defilement subtly infiltrating into our spirits will have an effect on what comes out (Prov 4:23; Mt 12:35, 15:19).
In comparison how much quality time do I spend with the Lord?
device or to just fill in your day (Eph 5:15,16; Phil 4:8; 1 Thes 5:21,22). Be discerning as time is a valuable and limited resource – is watching TV the most profitable use of my time? Have you read a good book recently, undertaken some exercise or tackled your ‘to do list’? We are not to be mastered by anything or anyone except the Lord (Rom 6:16; 1 Cor 6:12).
Using discretion and self-control also applies to DVD’s and other forms of entertainment as well.
