Christian Manners and Etiquette

Manners reflect the outward expression of inner character, demonstrating courtesy, respect, and consideration for others in our daily interactions and conduct.

Biblical Foundation for Manners

We are to have integrity in all our dealings with others, being examples of right living by acting correctly and politely (Col 4:5-6; 2 Thes 3:7-10; Tit 2:7-8). A Christian should have higher etiquette standards than is accepted by society; Christ should be our role model.

Is my lifestyle consistent with biblical teaching?

Attitudes, habits and manners are formed from the numerous small, seemingly insignificant choices we make each day – these result in character qualities. Love has good manners that considers and respects others yet can be corrupted by bad speech (1 Cor 13:4-5, 15:33).

The Bible instructs us to "Do to others as we would like to be treated", putting ourselves in their place (Mt 7:12). This ''golden rule" principle guides our interactions and shapes how we respond to others in both pleasant and challenging circumstances.

Character Development Through Daily Choices

Am I courteous, considerate and helpful? Do I live like a Christian when things annoy me? These questions challenge us to examine whether our daily conduct reflects our faith and values. The way we respond to minor irritations and inconveniences often reveals the true state of our heart more than our behaviour in easy circumstances.

True Christian character is forged in the ordinary moments of life – in how we treat the checkout clerk, how we respond when someone cuts us off in traffic, or how we speak to our family after a difficult day. These seemingly insignificant interactions accumulate to form the habits that define our witness to others.

Developing good manners requires intentional practice and reliance on the Holy Spirit. It means choosing patience when we feel hurried, choosing kindness when we feel overlooked, and choosing respect when we feel dismissed. Over time, these deliberate choices become second nature, transforming our character into the likeness of Christ (Rom 8:29; Gal 5:22-23).

Reflection and Application:

  • Examine your daily interactions for opportunities to show Christ-like courtesy.
  • Practice putting others' needs before your own convenience.
  • Consider how your speech and conduct influence those around you.
  • Ask God to help you develop habits that honour Him in all relationships.
