Judah was the 4th son of Jacob and Leah (thus a great-grandson of Abraham and step-brother to Joseph). Due to intense jealousy, the 10 older stepbrothers planned to kill Joseph, however Judah suggested selling him as a slave instead – which, although not right, would not make them murderers.  It was through his family line (as one of the 12 tribes) that King David (and Jesus’ parents) descended.
