Christian Era: Understanding the Day of Grace and Our Call to Be Salt and Light
This period begins at Christ's resurrection, includes the present day and will conclude at the end of the world. No one knows when this time span, also known as the 'day of grace' will suddenly finish. The implication is: don't put off turning to Christ. When under conviction of the Holy Spirit to receive Christ, do not put it off until a more convenient time; you may never have another chance, so "Today, if you hear His voice", respond by repenting of your sin and accept the offer of salvation (Act 24:25; Heb 3:7-11).
The Decline of Christian Influence
In the past Western civilisation's values and culture have been predominantly shaped by Christian influences, however society is
progressively turning away from the standards and beliefs that formed this foundation and backbone of social order. Scripture points to this
decline yet it remains our responsibility as Christians to be salt and light – slowing this decay and introducing people to Christ the
"light of the world" (Mt 5:13-16; Jn 8:12, 9:5; 2 Tim 3:1-5).
How can I be a brighter light or saltier salt?
The Urgency of Response
The Christian era represents a unique period in human history—a dispensation of grace where salvation is freely offered through faith in
Christ. This time of divine patience and mercy, however, has its appointed conclusion. The biblical warning to respond promptly to God's
calling becomes increasingly relevant as we observe the moral and spiritual decline predicted in Scripture.
Our Enduring Responsibility
Despite societal rejection of biblical values, Christians are called to maintain their distinctive presence in the world. The metaphors of
salt and light emphasize both preservative and illuminative functions—preventing further moral decay while clearly displaying the truth and
love of Christ through our words, deeds, and character.
Reflection and Application:
- Consider areas where you can be more effective as salt and light in your daily interactions
- Reflect on how readily you respond when the Holy Spirit convicts your heart
- Evaluate whether you're taking full advantage of this day of grace to grow spiritually
- Pray for opportunities to influence others positively through your Christian witness
