Amazement: Encountering the Power and Presence of God

Amazement is more than mere surprise—it is a deep spiritual response to the manifest power, wisdom, and love of God. In Scripture, moments of divine intervention often leave people awestruck, recognizing that they are in the presence of something far greater than themselves. This article explores biblical examples of amazement, its connection to holiness and faith, and how we can cultivate a heart that remains open to the extraordinary works of God.

The Biblical Foundation of Amazement

Amazement is woven throughout the biblical narrative as a natural reaction to God's action. Joshua called the people to consecrate themselves because "tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you" (Josh 3:5). Holiness prepares the heart to encounter the miraculous. When God moves, He does so with power that demands attention and reverence.

Am I amazed at His redeeming love?

The Gospels repeatedly highlight how people responded to Jesus with astonishment. "The crowds were amazed at His teaching, because He taught with authority" (Mt 7:28). Unlike the religious leaders who relied on tradition, Jesus spoke with divine certainty. His words carried weight because they were backed by divine power. People were astounded when He calmed the storm—"the wind and the waves obeyed Him" (Mt 8:27). They marvelled at His wisdom (Mt 13:54), were amazed at the healings He performed (Mt 15:31), and stood in awe when He caused a fig tree to wither instantly (Mt 21:20).

Paul expressed shock that some believers so quickly turned from the gospel: "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you" (Gal 1:6). Here, amazement takes on a negative tone—indicating disbelief at spiritual compromise. This contrast shows that amazement is not just emotional excitement, but a reflection of one's spiritual condition.

True amazement arises from encountering the character of God—His holiness, authority, mercy, and power. It draws us deeper into worship, obedience, and faith.
