Springs of Living Water – God's Refreshing Supply
A spring is a place where water rises from the ground of its own accord – no bucket, no pump, no human effort. Scripture takes this everyday marvel and makes it a picture of the Spirit-filled life: grace that flows out from within, unforced and refreshing.
Water That Gushes Unaided
This is where water gushes unaided from the ground, as opposed to wells that require human intervention to obtain the life-sustaining commodity. The picture is deliberately chosen: what God gives does not have to be dug for or hauled up – it rises from a source already within.
Jesus said that from the inner being of those who believe in Him would come 'springs of living water' – a natural outflow of divinely anointed life to minister for Him (Jn 7:38). Are others refreshed by the flow of godly vitality that comes from within me, or am I bringing forth what is foul tasting? What is truly of God should create a thirst in those around about, and they will want to come and drink too (Jn 7:37).
Springs of living water to bless others
God's New Thing
God said, "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up…" (Isa 43:19). This is His doing, not requiring strenuous effort by us to bring forth results. A spring does not strain to produce water; it flows because of the hidden supply that feeds it.
In His sovereign capacity God sometimes initiates events of which we have little understanding. He may still involve us, but we can be assured He has the ultimate responsibility and capability, and we need not fear. Our part is simply to stay connected to the source and let Him bring the increase. A channel claims no credit for the water it carries: it is just a conduit that transfers the flow from the source to wherever it is required. Its whole value lies in staying open, clean and connected – never in generating the supply.
It is His work; we are merely the channel
Refreshed, and Refreshing
A spring is never private property. Its water travels on, feeding streams, stock and crops far beyond the place where it emerges. In the same way, the life of God within a believer is not meant to pool and stagnate: it is given to flow out – into family, workplace, church and neighbourhood.
The test of a spring is not how impressive the source looks, but whether anyone downstream is drinking. A life in step with the Spirit leaves people healthier, hungrier for God and glad they came near.
And the invitation stands wide open to all: "He that is thirsty, let him come and drink" (Rev 22:17). No price to pay, no effort to make – only a thirsty heart and a willingness to come to the source Himself and drink.
The invitation is, 'Come and drink'
Reflection and Application:
- Is my inner life a spring fed by God's Spirit, or a well I must pump by my own effort?
- Am I trusting God to bring forth His new thing, rather than straining for results?
- Are the people around me refreshed by what flows from my life?
- Am I drinking daily from Christ, the true source of living water?
