River

<<waterways>>

Several rivers are mentioned in the Bible, including those near the Garden of Eden (Gen 2:10-14); the Nile (Ex 2:3, 7:15-8:11); the Jordan (Josh 3:1-4:24; Mk 1:5,9); the river of life (Ps 46:4; Rev 22:1,2); the river in Ezekiel’s vision (Ezek 47:5-9).

The running waters of a river cleanse, promote life and provide refreshment in abundance as opposed to stagnant pools or dry barren soils that struggle to support any life. A person who has a vital and ongoing relationship with God is like a tree planted by streams of water from which it receives nourishment and so flourishes.

The Psalmist likens a godly person to a tree that by growing near a stream is constantly refreshed and productive, while the prophet Isaiah spoke of the coming deliverance for the people as a stream of water in the desert that gives life (Ps 1:1-3; Isa 32:2, 35:6,7). Jesus also used this image saying streams of living water (an analogy of the Holy Spirit) would flow from the innermost being of His followers (Jn 7:38). Just as a river needs to be constantly replenished or else the flow will diminish, so it is with us. The Bible says, be filled on an ongoing basis with the Holy Spirit so you can give out (Eph 5:18).
