Reprobate: A Life Turned from God
A reprobate is someone who has become morally corrupt through persistent rejection of God’s truth and authority.
The Root of Reprobation
Humanity rapidly degenerates because of the inherent, sinful nature people have. Just a few generations after Adam and Eve sinned, there was widespread iniquity (Gen 6:5-7). Society today continues that downward slide, away from God’s holy standards.
When people turn their backs on God, “suppressing the truth with wickedness”, He gives them over to a depraved mind and they do whatever they want without their conscience intervening (Rom 1:18-28; 2 Tim 3:8).
The rejection of truth leads to a corrupted conscience
The Marks of a Reprobate Life
Such people are full of corruption, unfit for doing anything good, they are morally worthless (Tit 1:15-16). Instead they reject what is good and live to satisfy their flesh.
These warning signs—self-love, pleasure-seeking, and hostility to what is good—reveal a heart that has turned away from God and His ways, and they should prompt us to examine our own lives honestly.
In ‘the last days’ people will lack sound principles, besides loving themselves and pleasure more than loving God, because Satan’s influence is paramount in those who are disobedient (Ex 20:3; Lk 10:27-28; Eph 2:2; 2 Tim 3:1-5).
The Final Outcome of Rejection
By not making use of the opportunities given them a person is just like barren land that only produces weeds and is considered useless (Heb 6:8). Persistent unbelief hardens the heart and leaves no room for repentance.
The result: barrenness, uselessness, and final separation from God
The reprobate life is not merely a list of bad behaviours; it is a settled condition in which a person has chosen darkness over light and is no longer able to discern the difference.
Reflection and Application:
- Examine whether you are suppressing truth in any area of life.
- Guard your conscience by regularly submitting your thoughts to Scripture.
- Resist the pull of self-love and pleasure that displaces love for God.
- Turn to Christ in repentance while the opportunity for grace remains.
