Reference, Reference Point

A Bible reference gives the location of a passage of Scripture. It takes the form of the name of the book (often abbreviated) followed by the chapter, and then the verse number. A colon separates chapter and verse. Example: 1 Cor 13:4, 6-8. This refers to 1st Corinthians chapter 13, verses 4, 6,7,8.

A reference Bible contain cross-references on the page connecting the same or parallel texts within Scripture. They help to provide more information on a related theme and show how the Scriptures are interconnected. Reference Bibles may also contain short book introductions and brief explanations whereas a study Bible additionally includes extensive commentary, and analysis articles.

A reference point is a basis or standard for evaluation, assessment, or comparison.  As they remain fixed or stationary, these location markers are used to judge or understand something else. Because these are solid facts, that do not shift they can be relied on to

provide a standard and for guidance. The Psalmist said, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps 119:105). We too, should evaluate or measure our lives against the Bible – God’s manual for life, knowing this is the standard by which our lives will be judged (Jn 12:48).

One of the main reference points for society is time – it is either BC or AD; before or after the birth of Jesus.
