Rebirthing: A New Age Therapy and the Biblical View of Spiritual Rebirth
Rebirthing is a therapeutic practice that promises emotional healing and spiritual renewal through special breathing techniques. For Christians, it raises important questions about how true spiritual rebirth is found.
Understanding Rebirthing
Rebirthing is a New Age therapy that uses controlled breathing techniques, often called "conscious connected breathing," to help a person revisit and release memories or emotions from birth, childhood, or past experiences. Practitioners claim it can bring healing, emotional freedom, and even a sense of being spiritually "reborn."
The practice was developed in the 1970s by Leonard Orr, who believed that specific breathing patterns could release trauma stored from birth and early life. A typical rebirthing session may last one to two hours and is guided by a trained facilitator. The person breathes in a continuous, circular pattern without pausing between inhale and exhale, while the facilitator offers encouragement and suggestion.
Spiritual Concerns
This practice is closely linked to other New Age ideas such as yoga, meditation, and energy healing. It relies on the belief that suppressed experiences can be stored in the body and released through special breathing rituals. Because of these spiritual foundations, rebirthing is not consistent with a Christian worldview and should be avoided by believers.
It is man's effort to produce transformation apart from God
Rebirthing also carries practical dangers. Some participants have reported intense emotional distress, panic, or false memories triggered by the breathing process. In a few tragic cases, vulnerable individuals—especially children—have been harmed. Christians are called to guard both their minds and bodies, and to test every spiritual practice against Scripture.
The Biblical Alternative
The Bible presents a different kind of rebirth. Jesus said, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again" (Jn 3:3). This rebirth is not achieved through breathing exercises, therapy, or human effort. It is the work of the Holy Spirit, who gives new spiritual life to everyone who repents and trusts in Jesus Christ.
Spiritual rebirth comes through faith in Jesus Christ
True Christian rebirth brings forgiveness of sin, a new relationship with God, and the promise of eternal life. When painful memories or past trauma remain, believers are invited to bring these to Jesus in prayer, asking Him to heal wounded places and restore what has been broken. Healing comes through the work of the Holy Spirit, the truth of Scripture, the support of the church community, and the loving presence of Christ—not through reliving trauma or manipulating spiritual energy.
Reflection and Application:
- How does rebirthing differ from the biblical teaching of being born again?
- Why should Christians be cautious about therapies that promise spiritual transformation through human techniques?
- What does it mean to be born again by the Holy Spirit?
- How can you help someone who has been drawn to New Age practices find true hope in Christ?
