Mother - Biblical Meaning and Spiritual Significance

The concept of motherhood in Scripture encompasses both the physical role of bearing and nurturing children, and the spiritual dimension of raising children in the faith. Throughout the Bible, mothers are portrayed with honour, dignity, and profound influence in shaping both families and the people of God.

The Role and Honour of Mothers

Both a father and mother are to be respected and their teaching followed so they may rejoice in their children (Ex 20:12; Prov 1:8, 6:20, 23:22,25, 29:15). The commandment to "honour your father and your mother" remains foundational to family life and societal stability. Mary, the mother of Jesus, like all our mothers should be honoured but not worshiped.

Because of sin God said childbearing would be painful and many women have died during or because of giving birth (Gen 3:16). Many other married women suffer from the stigma or mental anguish of childlessness, although medical assistance can prove helpful or babies be adopted. Yet a Christian woman can be a spiritual mother to more children than she could have in the natural realm (Gal 4:27).

Qualities of a Noble Mother

One of the various qualities of a noble woman or mother is "her children [biological and spiritual] will rise up and call her blessed" (Prov 31:10-31). A mother's heart is normally more tender and loving than a man's because of the bonding during the time of pregnancy. A mother often stores up and treasures things about her children, pondering them in her heart (Lk 2:19,51).

Her children will rise up and call her blessed – Proverbs 31:28

God's Mothering Nature

The Bible sometimes refers to the 'mothering qualities' of God in the way He cares for us. As a mother comforts her child, so God comforts His people (Is 66:13). Jesus Himself compared His longing to gather Jerusalem's people to a mother hen gathering her chicks under her wings (Mt 23:37). These passages reveal the nurturing, protective, and tender aspects of God's character.

Spiritual motherhood extends beyond biological boundaries. Women who mentor, disciple, and nurture others in the faith exercise a profound ministry that echoes throughout eternity. The apostle Paul spoke of this when he referred to his own spiritual parenting role (1 Cor 4:15; Gal 4:19).

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you – Isaiah 66:13

Reflection and Application:

  • Thank God for your mother and the sacrifices she has made, whether biological, adoptive, or spiritual.
  • Consider how you can honour your mother through your words, actions, and ongoing relationship with her.
  • Reflect on the mothering qualities of God and how He nurtures, protects, and comforts you as His child.
  • Pray for mothers who are struggling with infertility, loss, or the challenges of raising children in today's world.
