Makeup and Cosmetics in Biblical Perspective

The Bible offers wisdom on beauty, appearance, and the use of cosmetics that balances cultural practices with spiritual priorities.

Biblical Foundations

“Perfume brings joy to the heart” (Prov 27:9; SOS 1:3). However, “charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting” so “a good name is better than fine perfume” (Prov 31:30; Eccl 7:1). We humans often put undue attention on the visible sensory body, neglecting the 'real us' within (1 Sam 16:7).

Makeup should be pleasing and attractive but not provocative

Although ladies generally like to dress attractively, with appropriate accessories and makeup, the emphasis should be on the inner qualities of heart and character which bring glory to God rather than undue attention to the outward appearance (1 Tim 2:9-10; 1 Pet 3:3-5).

Balance and Perspective

There needs to be the right perspective – the outer additions enhancing the inner foundational character qualities. Undue time and money focused on the external indicates the priorities are out of balance.

Inner beauty is of greater value than outward adornment

The use of cosmetics should reflect a heart oriented toward godliness, where external beauty serves as a reflection of inner grace rather than a substitute for it.

Cultural Considerations

Throughout Scripture, cosmetics and perfumes were part of cultural life, used for celebration, honour, and daily care. The key distinction lies in the motivation behind their use – whether for self-glorification or as an expression of stewardship and gratitude.

Moderation and modesty reflect a transformed heart

Believers are called to exercise wisdom and discernment, ensuring that their presentation honours God and serves others rather than drawing inappropriate attention to self.

Reflection and Application:

  • Consider whether your use of cosmetics enhances or distracts from your witness as a believer.
  • Examine the time and resources invested in appearance relative to spiritual growth.
  • Reflect on whether your motivation is self-glorification or stewardship of God's gifts.
  • Pray for a heart that values inner character above outward presentation.
