Infinite: God's Limitless Nature

The concept of infinity points us to a reality beyond human comprehension—a quality that belongs only to the Creator, not the created. When we speak of God as infinite, we describe One who has no boundaries, no limits, and no end.

God's Eternal Existence

God is an infinite being who always has been and always will be; before anything else existed, God was there (Gen 1:1; Jn 1:1). This is difficult for our limited, finite minds to understand (Job 36:26). Unlike everything else in creation, God had no beginning and will have no end. He exists outside of time and is not constrained by its passage. This eternal nature means God has always possessed all His attributes perfectly and completely.

In the beginning, before time began, God existed in perfect fellowship within the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Jn 17:5). No other being or thing brought God into existence; He is self-existent and self-sustaining (Ex 3:14).

God sees all history at once—past, present, and future are equally known to Him (Isa 46:10; Ps 90:4). A thousand years in God's sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.

Because God is infinite and eternal, His character, purposes, and promises never change (Mal 3:6; Heb 13:8). What He was, He is; what He is, He will always be.

God's Limitless Power

God's incomparably great power has been revealed in Christ and is shown to us who believe in Him. His honour, both now and in eternity, will far surpass any other (Eph 1:18-23, 2:7). The power of God is not merely great—it is infinite, meaning there is no limit to what He can accomplish according to His will. This power was demonstrated supremely in raising Christ from the dead (Eph 1:19-20).

By His infinite power, God spoke the universe into existence from nothing (Heb 11:3; Gen 1). The vastness of creation—with its billions of galaxies—displays only a fraction of God's limitless power (Ps 33:6-9).

God's infinite power works together with His perfect wisdom to accomplish His purposes. No plan of His can be thwarted (Job 42:2; Isa 14:27). He works all things according to the counsel of His will (Eph 1:11).

Throughout Scripture, God displays His power through miracles that defy natural laws—parting the Red Sea (Ex 14), healing diseases (Mt 8:1-3), and even raising the dead (Jn 11:38-44). These signs point to His infinite authority over all creation.

God's Infinite Attributes

Heaven and hell will never end. The infinite nature of God extends beyond His existence and power to encompass all His attributes. His love, mercy, justice, holiness, and knowledge are all without limit or measure. This means God cannot be exhausted, diminished, or improved upon—He is perfect in every way, infinitely.

God's love has no bounds; He loved us before we loved Him, and His love endures forever (Jer 31:3; 1 Jn 4:19). This love led Him to send His Son to die for us while we were still sinners (Rom 5:8).

God knows everything—past, present, and future; the seen and the unseen; the thoughts and intentions of every heart (Ps 139:1-6; Heb 4:13). Nothing is hidden from His infinite understanding.

God's holiness is beyond measure; He is completely set apart from sin and utterly pure in every way (Isa 6:3; 1 Pet 1:15-16). His holiness is the standard against which all else is measured.

Reflection and Application:

  • How does knowing God is infinite change the way you pray and trust Him?
  • What limitations in your life can you bring to a God who has no limits?
  • How does God's eternal existence bring comfort when facing temporary struggles?
  • In what ways can you reflect God's infinite nature to others through love, patience, and faithfulness?
