Co-operation: The Divine Principle of Working Together for Common Purpose

Co-operation represents the harmonious collaboration between divine and human effort, where faithful action meets God's guidance to accomplish His purposes on earth.

Divine-Human Partnership in Action

Whether it is with God or man, co-operation requires our involvement; harmoniously working together for a common objective, whereby each participant contributes and each will benefit in some way.

The servant looking for a bride for Isaac said, "I being in the way, the Lord led me…" (Gen 24:27). He was faithfully and actively doing his duty so God enhanced and guided him.

"We prayed to God and posted a guard…" enabling us to accomplish the goal (Neh 4:9, 6:16). The Lord said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on" (Ex 14:15).

"Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed His Word by the signs that accomplished it" (Mk 16:20). It is futile to pray, 'Lord save the lost' unless I am giving to missions and telling people about Jesus. He works through people – He will love through my love.

"I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow" (1 Cor 3:6-8). It is essential for players to apply themselves consistently and conscientiously to the project so any discord or complaining will be kept to a minimum as everyone pours their energy into and is focused on the desirable conclusion.

"If we...God will..." (Isa 58:9-11). To receive the promise we must fulfill our part.

Without Christ we are unable to bring about the death of the old fleshly nature, our responsibility is to deny self and make 'life' choices.

The Power of United Effort

"Two people are better than one. When two people work together, they get more work done" (Eccl 4:9-12). There is added power in numbers (Lev 26:8).

Seldom can we accomplish anything of significance without enlisting the assistance of others who can help carry the load, support us in times of discouragement, and enjoy the rewards. Everyone involved should be rewarded fairly (1 Sam 30:24). Pulling in the same direction accomplishes while pulling in opposite directions negates the effort involved so live in vital relationship with the Lord, being obedient to His voice.

Am I pulling my weight as a team member?

Reflection and Application:

  • Am I actively doing my part while trusting God to guide and bless the outcome?
  • Do I recognize that both prayer and action are essential components of co-operation with God?
  • How can I better contribute to team efforts in my family, church, and workplace?
  • Am I willing to share the rewards with all who contribute to the success of any endeavor?
