The Book of Life: A Divine Register of Eternal Destiny

A biblical exploration of the Book of Life, its significance, and how one’s name is inscribed through faith in Christ.

The Significance of the Book of Life

It is also called the Lamb’s book of life because it contains the names of those who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ (the Lamb of God) and because they are walking with God (Lk 10:20; Jn 1:29; Phil 4:3; Rev 3:5, 20:12, 21:27). This is the only list in the universe where it is imperative that our name appears, for those whose names are not recorded in this book of life will be thrown into the lake of fire and experience eternal death (Rev 20:15).

Is my name recorded there?

How Is a Name Written in the Book?

The Bible states entry of an individual's name into the book of life is the result of salvation, which involves repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour, accompanied by a commitment to follow His teachings. Adherence to church traditions or engaging in good works alone does not secure this as it is determined by Him, rather than individual approaches or interpretations (Mt 4:17; 7:21-22; 21:32).

The Permanence of Salvation: Can a Name Be Erased?

There is much debate over this controversial issue: Is it possible for a person's name to be erased from the book of life after falling into sin and continuing in a wilful sinful lifestyle? We do not want to give a wrong impression or be held responsible for stating a person is guaranteed eternal life, who having said the sinner's prayer at one time and subsequently shows very little evidence of being a "new creature in Christ" (2 Cor 5:17). "God knows those who are His, and everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness" (2 Tim 2:19).

Reflection and Application:
  • Examine your life: Do your actions reflect a genuine relationship with Christ?
  • Rest in grace: Salvation is by faith, not works — yet true faith produces change.
  • Live with eternity in mind: Your name in the Book of Life calls for holy living.
  • Share the hope: Encourage others to ensure their names are written in the Lamb’s book.
